Short answer: Citizens of 97 countries, including France, the UK, the US, Australia and most of Europe, can enter Bali on a visa on arrival (VOA). It costs IDR 500,000, gives you 30 days, and can be extended once for another 30 days, so 60 days is the maximum. You can buy it online before you fly as an e-VOA at evisa.imigrasi.go.id or at the airport counter, and on top of the visa you pay Bali’s IDR 150,000 tourist levy and fill in the free All Indonesia arrival card. US dollar figures in this guide use a rough rate of IDR 16,500 to USD 1. Check the day’s rate before you pay.
What changed for the Bali visa on arrival since 2025?
If you last read about the VOA a year or two ago, four things are different now:
- Extensions need an in-person visit. Since 28 May 2025, under immigration circular IMI-417.GR.01.01, you apply online but must then attend an immigration office for fingerprints, a photo and a short interview. Online-only extensions are over. (Bali Easy Visa, citing the circular; Flado)
- One digital arrival card replaced the paper and app forms. All Indonesia, in use since September 2025, combines the immigration, customs, health and quarantine declarations in one free form. (Legal500 / Murzal & Partners; Imigrasi Karawang)
- The Bali levy rules were updated in 2025. The amount is still IDR 150,000, but the regional regulation was amended (Perda 2/2025) and the payment rules were reissued (Pergub 25/2025). (Love Bali FAQ)
- Bali has announced proof-of-funds checks for tourists. In January 2026 the provincial government said visitors may have to show up to three months of bank statements, a return ticket and accommodation details. As of October 2026 we treat this as announced, not enforced. (Time Out, 15 January 2026)
What has not changed: the fee. The visa on arrival has cost IDR 500,000 since Government Regulation (PP) 28/2019 on immigration tariffs, and the 2022 tariff revision under Finance Ministry Regulation PMK 9/PMK.02/2022 left it untouched. (Merah Putih; Imigrasi press release, April 2022) If a website quotes you USD 35 one minute and IDR 850,000 the next, it is either out of date or adding its own service fee.

Every traveller pays the full visa fee, including children and babies. (Komodo Resort guide) A family of four staying 60 days therefore pays IDR 4,000,000 in visa fees (four VOAs plus four extensions) and IDR 600,000 in levies before a single hotel night.
Watch out for lookalike websites. The only government portal is evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Other sites, including some that rank well on Google, resell the same e-VOA with a markup on top of the IDR 500,000.
Which countries can get a visa on arrival in Bali?
Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration lists 97 eligible nationalities. (detikNews, January 2026)

Two points people miss:
- ASEAN citizens can enter visa-free, but that free 30-day stay cannot be extended. If there is any chance you will stay longer than 30 days, take the VOA instead, because the VOA can be extended. (evisa.imigrasi.go.id)
- If your country is not on the list, you cannot get a VOA at the airport. You need an e-Visa issued before you travel, usually the C1 tourist visit visa. See our page on the single entry visit visa.
What can you do on a visa on arrival?
The VOA is a short visit visa for tourism, visiting family and friends, and transit. (Komodo Resort guide) It also covers non-paid business activity such as meetings and discussions.
What it does not cover:
- Any paid work in Indonesia, including freelancing for Bali clients, teaching yoga classes, DJ sets or running a villa.
- Working in a business without permits. Bali’s Governor Circular 7/2025 on foreign tourist conduct lists working or running a business without official documents as a prohibited act. (Governor of Bali, SE 7/2025)
- Living in Bali long term. After 60 days you must leave. You cannot switch a VOA to another visit visa from inside Indonesia. (Komodo Resort guide)

e-VOA or VOA at the airport: which should you choose?
Both are the same visa at the same price. The difference is when you do the paperwork.

We recommend the e-VOA for almost everyone. A mistake on the form shows up at home, not at 1 am in the arrivals hall, and with an e-passport you can usually go straight to the autogates, where clearance takes around 25 seconds. (Tempo)
How do you apply for the e-VOA, step by step?
What you need (Imigrasi Yogyakarta; Komodo Resort guide):
- A passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date, with a blank page
- A clear photo of the passport data page and a passport-style photo (JPG or PNG)
- Your flight details, your Bali address and a return or onward ticket
- An email address and a Visa, Mastercard or JCB card
The steps:
- Go to evisa.imigrasi.go.id and choose the visa on arrival option. Type the address yourself rather than clicking an ad.
- Create an account and confirm your email.
- Upload your passport page and photo, then enter your travel details.
- Pay IDR 500,000 per person by card.
- Download the approved e-VOA from your email. Approval often comes within hours, but apply at least 48 hours to a week ahead. (Komodo Resort guide)
- Keep a printed copy and a copy on your phone.
The e-VOA must be used within 90 days of issue, and your 30 days start on the day you land, not the day it was approved. (Komodo Resort guide)
Applications are most often held up by a blurry passport photo, a passport with less than six months left, and a name typed differently from the passport. Check the spelling of every name, including middle names, before you pay.
What happens at Bali airport on arrival?
Here is the order of events at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport:
- Before you fly: complete the All Indonesia arrival card at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app. It can be submitted within the 3 days before arrival and gives you a QR code. (ImmiAssist; Legal500)
- Before you fly: pay the Bali tourist levy on Love Bali and save the QR voucher offline.
- No e-VOA yet? Go to the VOA payment counter, pay IDR 500,000 and keep the receipt.
- Immigration: use an autogate if you have an e-passport and an e-VOA, or a staffed counter. Officers can ask for your return ticket, hotel booking and proof of funds. (Wikipedia, entry requirements)
- Customs: show your All Indonesia QR code.
- Levy check: if you have not paid the levy, the airport has payment counters. (Love Bali FAQ)
Have hard copies of your onward ticket and first hotel booking. Phones die after long-haul flights, and “it’s in my email” is not an answer an immigration officer has to accept.
What is the Bali tourist levy and who must pay it?
The Bali tourist levy (Pungutan Wisatawan Asing, or PWA) is IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor, paid once per visit. It is separate from the visa and goes to the Bali provincial government, not to immigration. (Love Bali FAQ)
- Legal basis: Law 15/2023 on Bali Province, Bali Regional Regulation 6/2023 as amended by Regulation 2/2025, and Governor Regulation 25/2025.
- Who pays: foreign tourists travelling to Bali, including those who arrive from another Indonesian island and cruise passengers.
- Who does not: holders of a KITAS or KITAP (Indonesia’s temporary and permanent residence permit cards), family unification visas, student visas, diplomatic and official visas, and transport crew. Golden Visa holders and some other visa holders must apply for the exemption through Love Bali.
- How: online at lovebali.baliprov.go.id before you arrive, at counters at the airport and port, or at registered hotels and attractions. Payment is cashless: card, bank transfer, virtual account or QRIS.
- Proof: a QR voucher sent to your email.

How do you extend a Bali visa on arrival for another 30 days?
You can extend once, for 30 days, for IDR 500,000. (Wikipedia, visa policy summary) Since May 2025 the process has two parts: an online application, then an in-person appointment.
- Apply online on evisa.imigrasi.go.id. e-VOA holders use “Extend My Visa”. Airport VOA holders find their permit through the services menu. (Jakarta Globe)
- Pay before your 30 days end. If the application and payment go in before expiry, you do not incur overstay charges while it is processed (Permenkumham 11/2024, Article 97). (Jakarta Globe)
- Attend the immigration office that covers your accommodation address for fingerprints, a photo, a digital signature and a short interview. (Bali Easy Visa)
- Wait for approval and keep the extension document with your passport.
Start around day 14 to day 16 of your stay. Appointment slots fill up in July, August and December, and an application started on day 28 leaves no margin.

What happens if you overstay your visa in Bali?
Overstaying is the most expensive mistake on this list.

The fine runs per person per day. Two adults who miss a flight and leave three days late pay IDR 6,000,000, about USD 364, at the airport before they can board.
How people end up overstaying:
- Counting 30 days from the e-VOA approval date instead of the arrival date, or miscounting by one day. Your arrival day counts as day 1.
- Assuming the extension was approved because the payment went through, while the biometrics appointment was never attended.
- A cancelled flight. If a cancellation pushes you past your last day, go to the immigration office before the date, not after.
What if 60 days is not enough?
After your extended VOA ends you must leave Indonesia. Some travellers exit to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur and come back on a new VOA. That is not banned, but repeated back-to-back VOAs get noticed at the border, and officers can refuse entry to anyone who looks like they are living or working in Bali on tourist visas.
If you need more time, choose the visa before you travel:

- Investor, working, retirement or spouse KITAS: for those moving to Indonesia. These let you open a bank account, sign a long lease and in many cases skip the tourist levy.

Do French citizens need a visa for Bali?
Yes. France is not visa-exempt, so French passport holders need a visa on arrival or an e-VOA. It costs IDR 500,000 and is valid for 30 days, extendable once.
How much is the Bali visa on arrival in 2026?
IDR 500,000 per person, about USD 30, for both the e-VOA and the airport VOA. The 30-day extension costs another IDR 500,000. The IDR 150,000 tourist levy is paid separately.
Can I extend my visa on arrival online?
You start online on evisa.imigrasi.go.id, but since 28 May 2025 you must also attend an immigration office for biometrics and a short interview. Apply around two weeks before your 30 days end.
Is the Bali tourist levy included in the visa fee?
No. The visa fee goes to immigration and the IDR 150,000 levy goes to the Bali provincial government. You pay it separately on Love Bali or at the airport.
Can I work remotely in Bali on a visa on arrival?
The VOA is for tourism, family visits and similar short visits, not work in Indonesia. If you plan to work remotely from Bali for an overseas employer for a long period, the E33G remote worker visa is the safer choice.
How long before my trip can I apply for the e-VOA?
Up to 90 days before you travel. Apply at least 48 hours ahead, and earlier in peak season.
What is the fine for overstaying in Bali?
IDR 1,000,000 per person for each day, up to 60 days. Beyond 60 days you face detention, deportation and an entry ban.
Do children need their own visa on arrival?
Yes. Every traveller, including babies, needs their own VOA and pays the full IDR 500,000. One e-VOA application can cover up to five people.
