The right visa to live, work or invest in Indonesia

Last updated: 2 October 2026

Indonesia has around 110 visa categories since the 2025 reclassification, and the wrong one causes real problems.

The categories you will meet most often: visit visas for tourism and business (single entry C series, multiple entry D series), the working KITAS (E23), the investor KITAS (E28A), the remote worker KITAS (E33G), the second home KITAS (E33), the retirement KITAS (E33F), family KITAS (E31 series) and the permanent stay permit (KITAP).

FAQ

Visa questions, answered

? It depends on what you will do. Shareholders of a PT PMA use the investor KITAS (E28A), employees of an Indonesian company use the working KITAS (E23), remote workers paid from abroad use the E33G, people with substantial funds use the second home KITAS (E33), retirees aged 55 and over use the E33F, and spouses and children of residents use the family KITAS (E31 series). A KITAS is a limited stay permit; a KITAP is the permanent version.
No. Visit visas (the C and D series) allow tourism, business meetings, site visits and similar activities. Any employment or income earned in Indonesia needs a stay permit that allows it, such as the working KITAS (E23) or the investor KITAS (E28A) for your own company.
On 2 June 2025 the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections replaced the previous classification with Decree No. M.IP-08.GR.01.01 of 2025. The number of visa indices fell from 133 to 110, several categories were merged, and work visas were consolidated under the E23 index. Old names such as B211A are no longer in use.
Typically two to eight weeks from a complete file, depending on the category, the sponsor and whether a work permit plan (RPTKA) is needed first. Processing times are set by immigration and can change.
No one can. Immigration decides every application. What we do is confirm you are applying for the right category, prepare a complete file so it is not rejected on a technicality, and manage the process with the sponsor and immigration until a decision is issued.
