Securing a KITAS is just the beginning for relocating investors. The next step is ensuring your family can join you and stay in Indonesia with the right legal status.

A spouse KITAS, along with permits for children and sometimes parents, gives each family member legal residence status. The right pathway depends on your situation as the principal permit holder.

This guide explains how family permits work, which visa pathways are available for spouses, how children and parents can be included, and what these permits allow. ILA Global Consulting will help you confirm the correct category and file the family application with your KITAS to support a smooth relocation.

How Do Family KITAS Permits Work?

FAMILY VISA

In Indonesia, family visas are linked to the main permit holder. If you are the principal applicant, your dependents’ permits follow your status.

If you hold a work KITAS, an investor KITAS, or a long-term permit such as the Golden Visa, your spouse, children, and sometimes a parent can get a family permit through your sponsor.

Each family permit’s validity aligns with the main permit holder’s status.

For standard work or investor KITAS holders, family permits usually last one or two years and renew with the main permit.

For long-term permit holders, family permits can be extended for 5 or 10 years to match the main permit’s duration.

Durée Définition
ITAS
(Limited Stay Permit)
An Indonesian limited stay permit that allows an eligible foreign national to legally reside in Indonesia for a specified period and purpose under Indonesian immigration regulations.
ITAP
(Permanent Stay Permit)
An Indonesian permanent stay permit that allows an eligible foreign national to reside in Indonesia on a permanent basis, subject to the requirements and conditions established under Indonesian immigration regulations.
Principal Permit Holder The foreign national whose immigration status forms the basis for a dependent or family member’s residence permit in Indonesia.

Which Spouse KITAS Applies to Your Situation?

The correct visa category depends on whether your spouse is joining a foreign KITAS holder or an Indonesian citizen.

Spouse of a KITAS or KITAP Holder (E31B)

This category applies to most relocating investors. Your legally married spouse receives a residence permit sponsored through the same channel as your KITAS, whether your employer, PT PMA, or the entity managing your permit.

This permit:

  • Allows multiple entries
  • Enables access to local administrative services such as a bank account or driving license
  • Is renewed in line with the principal permit

Spouse of an Indonesian Citizen (E31A)

If you are married to an Indonesian citizen, your spouse sponsors the application directly. After two years of marriage, you can convert this permit to a spousal KITAP for permanent residence. ILA Global Consulting supports you from the initial application to securing your KITAP, ensuring a clear and efficient process.

These two categories are not interchangeable. Applying under the wrong category can cause significant delays or prevent approval.

How to Bring Your Children to Indonesia

children visa

Children fall under the E31E index and are sponsored like an E31B spouse permit, matching your KITAS duration and renewal. To qualify, the child must be under 18 and unmarried.

For children with an Indonesian parent who is a WNI, the equivalent path runs through the E31C or E31D indices, depending on whether the marriage or the child came first.

Can You Bring Your Parents to Indonesia?

Parents can be sponsored under the E31H category.

This pathway allows a parent to join a child holding an ITAS or ITAP. It uses the same sponsorship structure as the principal permit.

However, this route is more restricted than spouse or child permits. Not all KITAS categories support parent sponsorship. We recommend confirming eligibility before starting the application to avoid unnecessary delays.

What Documents Are Required for a Family KITAS?

For all types of family permits, you will generally need the following documents:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months
  • A recent color photograph
  • A bank statement showing at least USD 2,000
  • A sponsor or guarantee letter

Marriage and birth certificates need a sworn translation into Indonesian or English if issued in another language. Certificates issued abroad usually require legalization before immigration accepts them. This step causes the most delays for family applications, as legalization rules and processing times differ by country.

ILA Global Consulting will review your documents to make sure they meet Indonesia’s legalization requirements before we submit your application. This helps you avoid finding out partway through the process that a certificate needs to go back to your home country for authentication.

Durée Définition
Document Legalization A formal process used to authenticate a document issued outside Indonesia so that it can be recognized and accepted for official purposes in Indonesia.
Sworn Translation A translation prepared by a translator authorized or recognized under the applicable rules, allowing a foreign-language document to be submitted for official or legal purposes.

What Does a Family KITAS Allow You to Do

A spouse or family KITAS allows your spouse or adult family member to live in Indonesia, travel freely, and manage daily life. However, it does not permit work. This permit is strictly for residence.

If your spouse or an adult family member plans to work in Indonesia, they need a separate employer-sponsored work-authorized KITAS (E23). The family KITAS cannot be used for employment and does not replace a work permit.

Both permits can be held within the same household if necessary. However, each serves a distinct purpose, and one cannot substitute for the other.

Bringing Your Family the Right Way

Most issues in family KITAS applications are not caused by the visa category itself, but by how the application is prepared.

Common issues include submitting marriage or birth certificates that are not legalized, using different sponsors for main and dependent applications, or sending family permits separately instead of with the main KITAS.

A properly structured application ensures all family members move through the process together without delays.

ILA Global Consulting can confirm the correct family visa category, review your supporting documents, and manage the dependent applications alongside your KITAS. Contact our team to discuss your family’s KITAS requirements.

Questions fréquemment posées

Can my spouse work in Indonesia on a family KITAS?

No. A spouse KITAS is residence-only. To work, your spouse needs their own employer-sponsored work KITAS (E23), which is a separate application from the family permit.

How long does a spouse or family KITAS last?

It lasts for the same duration as the principal permit. Under a standard KITAS, this is typically 1 or 2 years and is renewed together. Under long-term permits, such as a Golden Visa, the duration can extend to 5 or 10 years.

What if I am married to an Indonesian citizen?

You must apply under the E31A category, which is sponsored directly by your Indonesian spouse. After two years of marriage, this pathway allows conversion to a spousal KITAP for permanent residence. Visit ILA’s Spouse Visa service to learn the detailed application process.

Can I bring my parents to Indonesia?

Yes, in certain cases under the E31H category. This depends on the type of KITAS you hold and should be confirmed before applying.

Does my marriage certificate need to be translated?

Yes. A marriage certificate issued outside Indonesia must be translated into Indonesian or English and legalized before submission. This document is most likely to delay a family application. ILA Global Consulting will help you check all the required documents before you apply.
